Bills of $37,341 are average for a pregnancy in the U.S., according to Elisabeth Rosenthal in a recent New York Times  article.  Charges for delivery tripled since 1996. Insured mothers-to-be now typically pay $3,400 out-of-pocket.  One father-to-be found a charge for amniocentesis alone exceeded his monthly earnings, and was billed at ten times the quoted amount. American bills for pregnancy and child-birth are high and itemized compared to other developed countries that charge nothing to modest flat fees.
