Health risk scores are compiled by health insurers. According to Fred Schulte, neither health plans nor Medicare share these scores with patients. Health professionals are largely in the dark about such scores.  Higher scores bring more revenue to Medicare Advantage plans. One way to increase the score is home visits to uncover more diagnosis codes to bill. Schulte has written a series of articles: "Why Medicare Advantage costs taxpayers billions more than it should," "Health insurers have their way with regulators," and "Home is where the money is for Medicare Advantage plans," posted on 6-4-14, 6-9-14, and 6-10-14 respectively. The June 4th piece was co-written with David Donald and Erin Durkin. These are posted under the banner "Medicare Advantage Money Grab" on the Center for Public Integrity site. LEARN MORE.
