Victims of violence are more apt to survive if a level 1 trauma center is within 5 miles. Yet "trauma deserts" exist, particularly where people of color and poor people live. At the scene of shootings, decisions of the police may delay access by first responders. The People's Community Medics is training people of color in emergency trauma care.
